Tucson, AZ – (April 20, 2015) Hughes Federal Credit Union, Southern Arizona’s premier locally-owned financial institution, on Saturday awarded four deserving high school members with $6,000 in scholarships as part of their 10th Annual Scholarship Program.
“Hughes is a local institution and we are proud to be able to provide financial assistance to our local high school members,” said John Sansbury, chairman of the board. “This is our tenth year awarding scholarships and we believe this program is helping our community’s youth prepare for their future.”
This year’s recipients were:
- 1st place – Diego Blew, Catalina Foothills High School, $2,500
- 2nd place – Trent Pearson, Tanque Verde High School, $2,000
- 3rd place – Emmalee Schafer, Sahuaro High School, $1,000
- 4th place – Jenna Trejo, Bowie High School Austin Texas, $500
The scholarships were open to all Hughes Federal Credit Union members who are in good standing and high school seniors entering a college or trade school in fall 2015. Applicants were required to submit a project aimed at encouraging young members to bank anytime, anyplace with Hughes Federal Credit Union’s electronic services. Points were awarded for the use of compelling visuals, mock advertisements, promotions and incentives. The scholarships were then awarded to students who demonstrated scholastic excellence, community service, and a strong desire to advance their education.
Hughes is a long-time proponent of financial literacy for its youngest members and was recently named one of the “10 Best Finance Resources by Teens” by BadCredit.org, a website devoted to raising the overall financial awareness of its visitors. Hughes was selected for their money know-how and support of financial education. The credit union is also title sponsor for Arizona KidCats Club and Arizona Take Charge Cats, both University of Arizona-affiliated groups, aimed at connecting kids to college and improving the financial literacy of Tucson’s young adults.
